In Plain Language. The first question is whether the leather meets the order. Grading then sorts acceptable pieces into useful commercial groups.
Example. Several saleable grades all pass the same required rub-fastness and substance limits.

In Plain Language. It focuses on what may remain in the assessed material. The exact list matters because different customers can set different requirements.
Example. A leather order identifies the customer RSL version against which testing will be evaluated.

Technical Definition. Manufacturing Restricted Substances List: a defined set of restrictions addressing substances in chemical formulations used during manufacturing, with scope established by the issuing program.
In Plain Language. It addresses process inputs. An input-chemical requirement and a finished-material test answer different questions and can both be relevant.
Example. A tannery reviews its purchased formulations against the specified MRSL while separately assessing finished leather requirements.

Technical Definition. A controlled additional or repeated operation intended to bring nonconforming material into the required condition, within the limits of what the material can tolerate.
In Plain Language. Rework needs a specific correctable problem. It cannot restore fibers removed by an overly deep cut or guarantee repair of every surface fault.
Example. A finish receives an approved corrective pass, while severely weakened material is diverted or rejected.
